Governor Please Stop Deleting Your Emails

For the second time this year Florida Governor Rick Scott's emails were accidentally deleted. What might be in those missing emails?

This week our Florida governor tap danced to another Steve Urkel "Did I do that?" moment when it was discovered that emails from his iPad suddenly and accidentally vanished.

This is the second time that the governor's emails have vanished in less than a year.  Rest assured though the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is passionately pursuing the plausible perpetrators of these devious accidental deletions, and Brian J. Burgess, Gov. Rick Scott's communication director, is appealing for calm and will see to it that the records are made public.

What if in one of those lost emails there was a message from CCS Medical saying, "Governor, we would like to keep our headquarters in Clearwater, FL, what can you do to help us keep 230 jobs here?"

If such an email was deleted then CCS didn't get an answer. Thinking the governor didn't care, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, hasn't experienced deleted emails, CCS announced yesterday that it is moving its headquarters to Farmers Branch, TX.  Ouch!

What if Sen. J.D. Alexander and Sen. Mike Haridopolos sent an email to Gov. Scott saying, "Governor, we think it is a good idea to put that prison privatization thingy into the state budget so it can't be discussed and must be voted on at the last-minute.  What do you think?"

If such an email was deleted then obviously "qui tacet consentire videtur" would kick in and well that just assumes a green light to go. Unfortunately, Leon County Circuit Judge Jackie Fulford didn't think putting that thingy into the budget was legal and ordered it halted.

Right now the City of Lauderdale Lakes is asking for the governor's help. It wants him to appoint an independent board to manage its finances because it is broke.  Reporters seeking comments from the governor didn't get return telephone calls or e-mails. What if these emails were deleted too? What will happen to the City of Lauderdale Lakes? Is there another way to get a pertinent answer from the governor that won't be deleted?

You may recall that in June of this year Florida's Joint Legislative Budget Commission voted to consolidate email servers because the Agency for Enterprise Information Technology believes the state will save $9.4 million or $15.3 million over seven years, depending on who you ask, and what day the numbers are formulated. Getting these servers consolidated was a high priority for our governor, and by the way this fairly new state agency reports to him too.

Shouldn't the governor establish a better track record with emails before significant changes like this are made? Seems kind of strange that his emails keep getting deleted and yet the state's Chief Information Officer reports to him. It's almost like the FDLE, the agency doing the missing email investigation, it reports to him too.  How odd?

Governor, please stop deleting your emails. There could be important messages like those mentioned above that could help our state make better choices rather than the implied silence that seems to be happening. Thank you.

On another note you may have seen a slight change in this blog. Yes sadly "e-mail" has died and been officially replaced with "email."  Like the deaths of Betamax, WordPerfect, HD DVD, and other things that might have been, Grammar Girl of Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing delivered the death sentence this week. We will miss you e-mail and thanks for the memories.
