I Believe it's a Good and Fair Idea...

A comment on fairness and open government

Carl Hiaasen recently published a column in the Miami Herald concerning the passing of a bill that requires all welfare recipients to take a drug test. He makes some excellent points that clearly show that people living below the poverty line are less likely to take drugs, I guess when you're struggling to find money for food it's a real challenge to find the extra bucks to buy recreational drugs. If they pass the drug test, which 96 out a 100 do, we foot the bill for it.

There is also a program in place to randomly test all state employees for illegal drug use, again we pay the bill.

Hiaasen rightly points out that the only people exempt from the law are the weasels that passed it, our legislators. As they are paid by the state that surely makes them state employees, so shouldn't they be tested, and like any other state employee face dismissal if they fail?

I have written to my representatives asking them to voluntarily take a drug test and post the results on his web page....

In the spirit of fairness, transparency and open government I'm asking you to voluntarily take a drug test, as all welfare recipients do and all other state employees do, randomly.

After taking the test you should publish the results on your web site so that we, the people that elected you, know that you meet the same  standards as other people who receive money from the state.

I look forward to seeing the results or if not your explanation as to why you should be exempt.

Sincerely,

Lets all do it, to find your representatives go to:
