Clearwater Crossing Guard Hit By Car While Helping Students

Clearwater Police are investigating an accident in which a police crossing guard was struck by a car just south of Oak Grove Middle School.

CLEARWATER, FL — Clearwater Police are investigating an accident in which a police crossing guard was struck by a car just south of Oak Grove Middle School.

The accident occurred at 4:28 p.m. Wednesday at South Belcher Road and Catalina Drive. A Honda Accord struck crossing guard Ernest Comeau, 78, and a Ford, and then fled the scene. However, the driver, Gregory Olson, 68, of Clearwater was apprehended when his car was pinned in by other drivers at Belcher and Nursery roads.

Comeau, who was helping students cross Catalina Drive, was admitted to Morton Plant Hospital with injuries that aren't life-threatening. He has been a crossing guard for three years.

Olson was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury, driving with a suspended license and failure to obey a traffic control device.
