Pedestrian Death Leads To DUI Charge Against Clearwater Driver

An 18-year-old Clearwater man has been arrested after being accused of striking a pedestrian while driving under the influence.

CLEARWATER, FL — An 18-year-old Clearwater man has been arrested after being accused of striking a pedestrian while driving under the influence.

According to Clearwater police, on Monday at 8:45 p.m., Cardon David Powell, 18, was driving a Jeep Cherokee west on Gulf to Bay Boulevard just west of Belcher Road when he struck a pedestrian who was not in a crosswalk.

The pedestrian, Shannon McKinney, 46, who was homeless, was taken to Morton Plant Hospital where he died. Police believe McKinney was also impaired at the time of the crash.

Powell was charged with a misdemeanor DUI.
