Hazardous Materials Team Investigates Suspicious Envelope At Bank

CLEARWATER, FL -- A Centennial Bank employee was treated for minor burn injuries after opening an envelope containing a suspicious substance.

Clearwater Police and Clearwater Fire & Rescue were called to Centennial Bank, 26417 U.S. 19 N., at 2:07 p.m. Monday after someone at the bank noticed an unknown substance on an envelope left at the bank by a former employee.

One male employee went to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for treatment of a burn injury to a finger after opening the package. He was treated and then released.

Members of the Pinellas County hazardous materials team entered the bank and obtained the package. It will be turned over to the FBI, which will investigate the incident.

The nine employees of the bank were evacuated to a nearby business during the incident.
