Clearwater Rescue Crews Save 5 Swimmers Caught In Rip Currents
The Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department is warning swimmers to be careful of strong rip currents along Clearwater Beach.
CLEARWATER, FL – The Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department is warning swimmers to be careful of strong rip currents along Clearwater Beach.
On Monday, July 23, fire rescue personnel assisted five swimmers at two different locations who were struggling with strong rip currents -- all within an hour.
The first incident was reported in the 700 block of Eldorado Avenue at about 7:15 p.m. An father and son were stuck in the strong currents and yelling for help offshore in the rough Gulf of Mexico seas.

Firefighters responded, and one crew member was able to swim out on a surfboard to help the two get to shore.
Then, just after 8 p.m., a call was received for swimmers in distress south of Pier 60.

Crews responded there and a fire medic on a surfboard assisted three swimmers caught in the strong currents.
Dangerous rip currents and surf conditions are expected to be present through Tuesday evening, according to the National Weather Service at Ruskin.
It is always best to know surf conditions before going into the water and to always swim near a lifeguard when possible, said Clearwater rescue personnel.
None of the five required medical treatment.
