Clearwater Tornado Girls Win District Championship in 4x400m Relay

The Tornadoes also will send four athletes to the regional meet.

The only surprise from Destiny Jenkins was that she did not repeat as district champion in the 200m. As it is, she qualified in three events: the 200m, 400m and 4x400m relay.

In all, four Clearwater High athletes are going to regionals after competing against five other high schools at the 4A Region 2 District 5 tournament Wednesday.

Jessica Maggio continued to perform well in hurdles, taking the district crown in 300m and second place in the 100m. She was also on the district champion 4x400m relay team.

Courtney O'Donoghue took the district crown in pole vault with a 10 foot jump, improving on her 9 foot 6 inch mark from last year.

Valiece Long got in at third place in the 800m with a time of 2:28 minutes and ran on the district champion 4x400m relay team.

None of the boys qualified for regionals. Although sophomore Devijion Smith came in seventh in the triple jump, scoring a couple points for the team. Meanwhile, senior Charles Payton scored a point, coming in seventh in disc.

Anthony Rossi scored four points for the team by placing fifth in the 300m hurdles. Rossi was three-tenths of a second away from qualifying for regionals. He also made the finals in the 110m hurdles.

Both boys and girls teams are still very small. Considering that, the girls still put up 63 points, coming in seventh but just a single point behind the Countryside girls team.
