Deepwater Horizon Settlement: How Should Pinellas Spend $7.1 Million?

The county is seeking resident input on how it should spend its settlement related to the 2010 Gulf oil spill.

CLEARWATER, FL — Pinellas County has $7.1 million to spend courtesy of its settlement related to the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Now, it’s turning to county residents and organizations for input on just where that money should go.

To help collect input on the subject, the county has kicked off an online survey. The forms will be accepted through April 29. Residents are asked to offer input on whether the money should be distributed countywide or fund a project in the unincorporated area. In addition, residents can suggest one project or multiple ventures. The types of projects the county says the cash can fund include arts and culture, economic development, transportation, recreation and more.

The money available to spend comes from a lawsuit filed following the 2010 oil spill that created damages along the entire Gulf Coast. The county’s share of the subsequent settlement, after attorneys’ fees and other expenses, added up to $7.1 million.

“The settlement represents a one-time revenue source; after these funds are expended, there will not be any
additional money,” the county explained in an email to media.
