Florida Pooches Nation's Most Trigger Happy, Report Says

From the number of annual shark attacks to the amount of lawyer ads on television, the Sunshine State leads the nation in a variety of unusual rankings.

The latest first-place ranking, however, might take the cake in its bizarre nature. It seems the state has witnessed more accidental shootings perpetrated by pooches than any other in the past five years, according to The Washington Post.

The Post was inspired to conduct its odd stroll back through headlines by a shooting that occurred in Indiana recently. In that case, a chocolate Labrador retriever, who happens to be named Trigger, accidentally shot a woman in the foot while out hunting, the Palm Beach Post reported. It seems the dog managed to step on a loaded shotgun in just the right way to make it fire.

The Washington Post’s tally of dog-fired shots since 2004 came to a total of 10. Four of those cases happened in Florida, earning the state its own category in a Post chart illustrating the frequency of mishaps. Only one of the shootings resulted in a fatality, the paper noted. The death happened in Texas in 2008.

A whopping 50 percent of the dog-related gunshots happened while people were hunting. Two happened on a boat.

Just to be fair, canines aren’t the only four-legged critters to have accidentally shot humans. A Michigan man was accidentally shot by his cat in 2005, Fox News reported.
