Atlanta Man Drowns Trying To Rescue Family Members In Clearwater

CLEARWATER, FL — An Atlanta man drowned Monday afternoon while attempting to rescue two family members who were having trouble in the water.

According to Clearwater Fire Rescue officials, the incident happened near Tower 3. Thanh Nguyen, 55, swam out into the ocean to help his son and niece who were struggling in the water. Nguyen then began struggling himself.

Lifeguards were alerted and found Nguyen floating in the water. They attempted CPR until medics arrived.

He was taken to Morton Plant Hospital where he was pronounced dead less than an hour.
