Go Skateboarding Day at Ross Norton Skatepark

Skaters got their grind on at the city skatepark to celebrate Go Skateboarding Day.

The Go Skateboarding Day headquarters in Clearwater centered on the Ross Norton Skatepark on Tuesday afternoon.

About 20 skateboarders were rolling around the park by 3 p.m.

Charlie Crank, of Murder Ride Skateboards, was in the pro shop taking care of business and answering all the kids' skate-related questions.

"I hand-painted all these decks myself, none of that cheap transfer stuff you see," Crank said as he showed off some new boards. The shop at Ross Norton offers wheels, trucks and bearings for sale as well.

, skateboarding's official holiday, takes place June 21 each year with events celebrated around the world. Skateboarders take to the streets, shops and local parks in every city to devote time to skating.

The International Association of Skateboard Companies started the event in 2003 in Southern California as low-key skate sessions and BBQ. In less than a decade it has blossomed into a worldwide phenomenon.

Skateboarders are free to organize their own events to help spread the ideas of skateboading to inspire and encourage creativity.
