Hit-And-Run Victim Identified

The search for the motorist involved continues.

The Clearwater Police Department has identified the woman struck by a car Thursday evening as she was crossing Myrtle Avenue.

According to the agency, Tammie Whiting, 53, of Clearwater, was crossing Myrtle Avenue around 6:15 p.m. when the crash occurred. Whiting was heading eastbound on a green light in the designated crossing area when she was struck. The vehicle that hit her was heading southbound in the median lane, police wrote in an email to media. That vehicle, police say, ran the red light, hit Whiting and then fled the scene.

The vehicle involved is said to be a four-door silver sedan, possibly a Ford Taurus.

Whiting remains hospitalized after the crash. She suffered critical injuries, police say.
