Leandro Castro's Homer Lifts Threshers Over D-Jays

Brian Gump's leaping catch in the ninth enables Clearwater to survive in extra innings,13-12.

The Clearwater Threshers hit five home runs Tuesday (June 14),  defeating the Dunedin Blue Jays 13-12, in ten innings. 

Leandro Castro's second home-run on the night, broke a 12-12 tie, ending the Threshers three game losing streak. 

The Thresher pitching was ready to redeem themselves after a difficult series in Daytona but they failed miserably again. Five Thresher pitchers surrendered leads of 9-1 and 12-5 before Ebelin Lugo shut-out the Jays in the tenth.

Darin Ruf (4), Cesar Hernandez (2), and Joe Savery (2) also hit round trippers in the three hour and 40 minute marathon. 

The bottom of the ninth was a story of its own. With the D-Jays trailing 12-10, the Threshers brought in their once untouchable closer Justin Friend. With one out and one on, he proceed to hit three of the next five batters he faced. Throw in a single and the Jays tie it.

The play of the evening was a game saving catch in the ninth by Brian Gump, who climbed the fence in left forcing extra innings. 

On deck: Clearwater visits Florida Auto Exchange Stadium, Wednesday (June 14), for the second of the three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
