Lightning Possibly Strikes Two At Sand Key Beach In Clearwater Area

The individuals were rushed to hospitals in Tampa and Largo.

CLEARWATER, FL – Two men were rushed to hospitals this afternoon after apparently being struck by lightning or affected by lightning that struck nearby on Sand Key, according to the Clearwater police.

"Both victims were on the sand at the time of the lightning strike," the department said, adding that the call came in at 4:26 p.m.

The incident occurred on the beach in front of Lighthouse Towers along the 1200 block of Gulf Boulevard.

One man was transported to Tampa General Hospital, and the more seriously injured was rushed to Largo Medical Center, police said. No additional information was available on their conditions.

The identities or hometowns of the two were not released, and they were described as young adults from out-of-town.
