Man Dies After Crashing into Clearwater Beach

The accident happened Wednesday afternoon.

An 86-year-old man is dead after his car crashed into Clearwater beach.

The incident unfolded around 4:30 p.m. when Clearwater emergency crews were called out to the beach after getting reports of a car that knocked down two concrete poles at a marina near the intersection of Gulf and Bayway boulevards. The car then glanced off a sailboat, knocking both masts to their sides, before landing in 10 feet of water about 40 feet from shore.

Emergency crews from the Clearwater Police and Fire & Rescue departments were able to pull the unconscious man from his car. The man, Sam Walter Weeden of Clearwater, however, died later in the evening at Morton Plant Hospital, an email to media from Clearwater police stated.
