Artists From Uruguay Paint Mural On Clearwater Parking Garage

CLEARWATER, FL -- Residents and visitors won't have to go to a gallery to see artwork in Clearwater.

The city's Community Development Agency has hired five teams of muralists to turn five buildings in downtown Clearwater into works of art.

The artists began creating the colorful murals before Thanksgiving. They will tell the story of the city's past present and future from different points of view.

After receiving more than 100 applications from muralists, the city's CRA staff chose three muralists are from Tampa Bay, one from Gainesville and a team from Uruguay.

Residents are invited to stop by the mural being painted by Uruguay artists Camilo Núñez and Florencia Durán at 28 N. Garden Ave., Clearwater, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Dec. 8. The mural will cover several stories of the parking garage.

Also creating murals are:

• Justin McAllister and the Gibbs High School Mural Club of St. Petersburg who will paint their mural at the Flag Company, 1360 Cleveland St., Clearwater.

• Michelle Sawyer and Tony Krol of Tampa who are painting the walls of Creative Contractors, 620 Drew St., Clearwater.

• Cecilia Lueza of St. Petersburg who is painting a commercial property at 512 Cleveland St., Clearwater.

• Julia Morrisroe of Gainesville who will paint a mural at Clearwater Tower Parking Garage, 33 N. Garden Ave.

The muralists will continue painting through December and hope to have the murals completed by the end of January. The goal is to complete all the murals by the end of January.
