Young Mother Receives Clearwater Police Samaritan Award

CLEARWATER, FL -- Clearwater Police honored a woman Thursday with a Samaritan Award for helping officers take care of two children during a DUI investigation.

Police Chief Dan Slaughter recognized Megan Andrews during a ceremony at police department headquarters, 645 Pierce St.

Andrews was driving on McMullen Booth Road on Nov. 26 when she saw a police officer trying to take care of two toddlers on the side of the road. The toddlers' mother was intoxicated when she rear-ended another car with her two kids in the car, according to Clearwater Police.

Andrews stopped and asked the officer if he needed help, and he quickly accepted her offer. Andrews, herself the mother of two young children, then drove home and got toys, snacks and drinks for the children to occupy them while they waited for their grandmother to come get them.

"Megan could have just driven on by the scene like most others would do," said Slaughter. "But she saw a need and chose to get involved and help. She epitomizes what the Samaritan Award is all about - people who go above and beyond to help others."
