Pedestrian Killed in Clearwater Accident Last Night Identified

A pedestrian who was struck and killed trying to cross McMullen Booth Road last night has been identified as a Safety Harbor man.

Thursday night a pedestrian was stuck and killed attempting to cross McMullen Booth Road. Today, Clearwater police have identified the victim.

Robert C. Groening, 79, of Safety Harbor, attempted to cross McMullen Booth Road from the west side to the east side, Clearwater police say. Groening made it to the curb of the east side of the busy road when he was struck by Melissa Leiner, 58, of Palm Harbor, driving a two-door 2006 Chevrolet driving northbound. 

Clearwater police state there was no sign of impairment from Leiner, who was not cited or charged.

Groening attempted to cross McMullen Booth Road near the Chi Chi Rodriguez golf club, 3030 McMullen Booth Road. He did not use a crosswalk nor an intersection.
