Photos: Cops and Kids Enjoy a Few Good Books

Some of Clearwater's finest helped youngsters with Celebrate Literacy Week activities.

Clearwater Police officers are sworn to protect, serve and it would seem inspire a love for reading.

At least that was the case Tuesday when Chief Dan Slaughter and Major David Dalton reported to Light of Christ Early Childhood Center to help students there with their Celebrate Literacy Week observance. Officer Ray Croze also made an appearance at UMCM Early Learning Center at St. Paul’s.

The officers read such books as “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus,” and “Time to Sleep” to the kids.

Literacy week runs through Jan. 30. The visits were coordinated by the Early Learning Coalition of Pinellas County in an effort to spark an early interest in reading among children within Pinellas, according to the Clearwater Police Department’s Facebook page.

“Not to steal a quote from George Benson, but I believe our children are our future,” Chief Slaughter was quoted in a media release about the appearance as saying. “Reading allows children to secure their future.”
