Pier 60 Park Renovations Almost Complete

Sunset Cinema is expected to make its return once Pier 60 work is finished.

CLEARWATER, FL — Tampa Bay area residents eager for Sunset Cinema to return to Clearwater’s Pier 60 are in luck. The city announced that renovations to the park are expected to be completed by Sunday, Feb. 28.

“Visitors will now have a more enjoyable and enhanced experience when visiting America’s best beach,” the city said in an announcement of the impending completion. “By expanding the park, the city of Clearwater believes the redesign will improve the flow of pedestrians, as well as maintain the continuity of Beach Walk.”

Park enhancements included a re-grading project to create amphitheater-like seating for events and movies. This will pave the way for the return of Sunset Cinema at Clearwater Beach, the city said. The movies are played on Friday and Saturday nights. Visitors are asked to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets or beach towels to sit on while catching the free shows.

In addition to new grading, the park now boasts an expanded beachwalk to Mandalay Avenue, more open space, improved storm water retention and a decorative seating wall along the walkway. While renovation work will be finished on Feb. 28, the city notes that some of the sod will take time to firmly root. That means some areas will remain closed to the public for a time.

Other beach projects that are nearing completion include a renovation of the woman’s bathroom at Barefoot Beach House, 332 S. Gulfview Blvd. This project includes increasing the number of available stalls.
