Pinellas Mother Accused Of Seriously Injuring 6-Month-Old Baby

The mother of a 6-month-old baby was arrested after being accused of repeatedly shaking the child, causing multiple brain hemorrhages.

CLEARWATER, FL — The mother of a 6-month-old baby was arrested after being accused of repeatedly shaking the child, causing multiple brain hemorrhages.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office arrested Paola Yanis Perez, 21, of unincorporated Clearwater Thursday and charged her with two counts of aggravated child abuse with great bodily harm.

Detectives began their investigation Oct. 22 when paramedics rushed the baby to All Children's Hospital. A family friend called 911 after noticing the baby was vomiting, crying excessively, and was stiff and shaking in his sleep.

Doctors said the baby had multiple brain bleeds in different stages of healing.

Detectives interviewed both Perez and the baby's father, 25-year-old Guillermo Torres. Perez admitted to detectives that, at least two times, she became frustrated with the baby and forcefully grabbed the child, causing his head to jerk back and forth without support his head.

The baby remains in the hospital in serious but stable condition.
