CLEARWATER, FL — The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is investigating an accident involving a deputy Thursday night.

The crash occurred at the intersection of U.S. 19 North and Curlew Road in unincorporated Pinellas County at 7:31 a.m.

According to investigators, 50-year-old Saralina Ponce of Clearwater was traveling west on Curlew Road in her Nissan Altima when an ambulance with its emergency lights on came up behind her. Ponce turned sharply into the southbound turn lane to get out of the ambulance's way and veered into the path of a Mazda 6 driven by 49-year-old Dawn Ergang of Clearwater. The impact caused the Mazda to spin and accelerate into westbound traffic where it struck a Pinellas County Sheriff's Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Deputy Travis Sibley.
