Publix Sets New Rules on Competitor Coupons

The grocery chain is making it a little tougher for consumers using other store's coupons to save a bundle at the register.

Publix customers used to cashing in on competitor coupons and even earning cash back from their purchases might want to brace for a change in policy the next time they checkout.

The Lakeland-based grocery chain has updated its policies in regard to competitor coupons, rain checks and cash back after sales.

The store’s new coupon policy is listed on its website, highlighting a number of changes, including the fact that dollars-off total-order coupons will now be limited to one Publix and one competitor’s coupon per day per household.

Money back after purchases made with coupons will no longer be issued in cash either. The store will now provide Publix gift cards instead.

In addition, the store is now putting the brakes on “shelf clearing,” according to the Orlando Sentinel. Shoppers will only be able to use up to eight of the same coupon per day, per household.

As far as rain checks go, forget about them on coupon purchases.

“Our management teams will only issue rain checks for items which are advertised outside the store at a reduced retail (price),” the store’s website says. “For example, on radio or TV, or in our weekly ad, co-op ad, mailer, or Internet site.”

Only one rain check per day, per household will be given for an item, and rain checks don’t apply for customers using Publix, competitor’s or manufacturer’s coupons.
