Sarasota More Dangerous than Tampa, St. Pete, Clearwater?

Sarasota has the dubious distinction of being one of Florida's Top 20 most dangerous cities, but other Bay area towns didn't make list.

When it comes to crime, Sarasota ranks among Florida’s worst cities.

That’s according to the website Home Security Shield, which recently released a rankings list based on information in the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report. Sarasota ranks No. 12 on Home Security Shield’s Top 20 list of Florida’s Most Dangerous Cities.

Based on its population of 53,055, Sarasota has a crime rate that adds up to about 63 crimes per thousand residents a year. The website estimates the chance of being a crime victim in Sarasota is 1 in 16. When only violent crimes are considered, Sarasota’s ranking drops to 26th in the state.
