Scam Alert: County Clerks Warn About Phony Emails

Notices to appear in court are never sent via email.

State officials are warning Florida residents to be wary of a new email scam that’s making the rounds locally.

The scam, according to the Pinellas County Clerk of the Circuit Courts website, involves fraudulent emails that tell recipients they are required to appear in court.

“These emails may appear to originate from well-known law firms and government agencies,” the website warns. “However, please note that they are indeed a scam intended to infect your computer through the use of attachments or links in the email.”

Word of the scam comes out of the Florida Court Clerks and Comptrollers office, which also warns that notices to appear never come by email or telephone, MyFoxTampaBay reported.
