Smyly Outduels Pettibone In Tigers Victory

Threshers manage only five hits in losing their eighth out of their past ten games.

The Lakeland Flying Tigers cruised to a 7-1 win Tuesday morning (June 28) over the Clearwater Threshers

The Threshers are in the midst of a miserable slump, winning just four of their past 17 games. What makes this even more remarkable is the Threshers send a quality starter out every night.

Most teams in the Florida State League have lost one or more of their starters to AA but the Threshers five Brody Colvin, Jarred Cosart, Trevor May, Jonathon Pettibone and Julio Rodriguez remain in Clearwater.

On Tuesday it was Pettibone. The 20 year old tops the Thresher starters with a 2.91 ERA.

A walk and an error produced a run in the third for the Flying Tigers. Three straight singles opened the fourth leading to two more runs. Two singles around a wild pitch produced another run in the fifth.

His counter part from Lakeland, Drew Smyly, gave up three singles to the first three batters of the game and then shut the door on Clearwater.

As expected Jonathan Singleton was selected the FSL player of the week. His numbers were staggering -  13-for-25, 3 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 6 R, 6 BB, 2 K, 1 SB.

May was selected the FSL pitcher of the week. The Phillies prospect pitched a 1-2-3 inning and ended up the victor in last week's FSL All-Star Game, but his regular-season start on Wednesday (June 22) really stands out. May punched out 14, tying a career-high mark, allowing one hit and two walks over seven innings at Tampa. May ended up without a decision, and the game was suspended due to rain with a 2-2 tie in the 10th.

On deck: The Threshers are hoping some home cooking will turn around their misfortunes. They host the Brevard County Manatees for a three game series. First pitch is at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
