Special Session On Stand Your Ground Law Falls Shorts Of Votes

On Friday, Aug. 10, the Florida Legislature rejected a call for a special session to review the controversial law.

TALLAHASSEE, FL -- There will be no special legislative session on Florida's Stand Your Ground law.

On Friday, Aug. 10, the Florida Legislature rejected a call for a special session to review the controversial law in the wake of the shooting death of 28-year-old Markies McGlockton in Clearwater July 19.

The measure needed the support of three-fifths of the 120 Florida House and 40 Senate members. However, a poll of the Legislature through Friday, supporters of the special session failed to garnered the required signatures.

In the Senate, 19 of the 40 Senators voted against and 15 voted for a special session. And in the House, 58 of the 120 state representatives voted against while 33 voted for the special session.

Most voted along party lines, with Democrats falling well short of the votes needed for the special session.

Voting for the special session were Sen. Darryl Rouson, D-St. Petersburg, Rep. Janet Cruz, D-Tampa, Rep. Ben Diamond, D-St. Petersburg, Rep. Shawn Harrison, R-Tampa, Rep. Wengay Newton, D-St. Petersburg and Rep. Sean Shaw, D-Tampa.

Voting against the special session were Sen. Dana Young, R-Tampa, Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, Sen. Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, Rep. Blaise Ingoglia, R-Spring Hill, Rep. J.W. Grant, R-Tampa, Rep. Chris Sprowls, R-Palm Harbor, Rep. Larry Ahern: R-Seminole, Rep. Danny Burgess, R-Zephyrhills, Rep. Richard Corcoran, R-Land O' Lakes, Rep. Chris Latvala, R-Clearwater, Rep. Kathtleen Peters, R-St. Petersburg, Rep. Jake Raburn, R-Valrico.

Not participating in the poll were Sen. Tom Lee, R-Thonotosassa, Rep. Amber Mariano, R-Port Richey, Rep. Ross Spano, R-Riverview and Rep. Jackie Toledo, R-Tampa.
