Students Get Lesson In Money Management At SPC Finance Park
Many parents will attest that their teens believe that money grows on trees or falls from the sky.

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL — Many parents will attest that their teens believe that money grows on trees, falls from the sky or can magically be pulled from behind one’s ear.
It’s never too early to teach fiscal responsibility, so when St. Petersburg College was given the opportunity to outfit a space at Finance Park, an immersive field trip experience designed to prepare students for making sound financial decisions after high school, the college welcomed the chance to contribute.
After a six-week economics unit, Pinellas County middle schoolers visit Finance Park to practice their skills at creating and living within a budget. During their visit, they are faced with several different financial decisions that they would face in real life, including those regarding housing, transportation, healthcare and, of course, higher education.

Jesse Turtle, Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of SPC’s Foundation, seized the opportunity when he heard of the recently opened space at Finance Park.
“It’s a great fit, because a big part of our mission at St. Petersburg College is to uplift families and the community through education and training,” Turtle said. “When they visit our area at Finance Park, the students -some of whom may think they would never be able to afford a college education – will be able to see the programs and opportunities we offer, as well as how we strive to make college affordable and attainable.”

In SPC’s area, visitors will find a beautifully designed space, where they are welcomed by a video of SPC President Dr. Tonjua Williams. Williams’ message outlines SPC offerings, campus amenities, student support and affordability. She also takes the opportunity to encourage young visitors to start thinking about and preparing for college.
“Now is the time to invest in your future,” Williams advises. “Pay attention in class, stay current on your homework and prepare for your exams. Your future depends on you.”
Students can also learn about the variety of programs SPC offers, as well as see a large collage depicting student life. The space is the result of a collegewide collaboration of talents, including those of the Foundation, Recruitment, Facilities, Marketing and Technology, all working together to create a stimulating, engaging and inspirational space.
“Over the last couple of months, our team of extremely talented individuals put together a remarkable space for future Titans to visit and explore SPC,” Jacob Wortock, SPC’s Director of Recruitment Services, said. “It’s such a great opportunity to create something impactful for our community.”
