Taco Tuesday: Mi Mexico Market and Taqueria

Get a complete fill up at this one half grocery store stocked with a wide variety of Mexican foods and one half taqueria, complete with piñatas, a foosball table and a jukebox.

Tucked away in the back of a small plaza on the west side of busy US 19, might look more like a grocery store than a restaurant.

But don’t be deterred by the giant “meat market” marquee on the façade and those “grocery” signs in the windows – Mi Mexico is indeed a restaurant as well as an all-purpose grocer.

While one side of the establishment is a full grocery store, stocked with a wide variety of Mexican foods including meats, produce and prepared meals, the other half serves as a taqueria, complete with colorful piñatas, a foosball table and a jukebox.

Of course for the purpose of this feature, I was sampling the tacos. So the fresh-cut cactus the owner’s daughter was preparing in the market would have to wait for another day.

The tacos at Mi Mexico are available in soft tortilla shells for $1.50 each, or as an appetizer platter of four deep fried tacos, called tacos dorados, for $6.99. All the usual flavors are available, including beef, chicken, pork and tongue.

The tacos I tested were the standard soft shell variety. They came packed with thick chunks of flavorful meat and topped with onions and cilantro. The side of salsa added a nice bite to them as well.

Wash it all down with a tasty Jarritos fruit punch, or one of the many domestic and imported beverages Mi Mexico carries, and you’ve got the makings of a perfect lunch time meal.

And when you’re ready to go, you can always pop next door to the market and pick up some authentic Mexican food to take home.
