Want To Be A Lifeguard? Tryouts Are Saturday In Clearwater

CLEARWATER, FL – Do you have what it takes to be a rescue professional for the city of Clearwater's Beach Patrol? The Beach Patrol is holding beach lifeguard tryouts on Saturday, March 25.

Those interested in trying out for this elite lifeguard team should meet in front of the Clearwater Beach Lifeguard Station at 190 South Gulfview Blvd. at 8:30 a.m.

The tryout will consist of a 500-meter open water swim followed by a one-mile beach run.

The swim must be under 10 minutes, and the swim and run combined must be under 18 minutes. The second phase of the tryout will require participants to successfully rescue an unconscious victim, tow them to shore and drag them five yards to dry sand.

Upon successful completion of all three, you will be scored, ranked and possibly scheduled for an interview. Those selected must be at least 17 years of age or older, must complete USLA-site specific lifeguard training, as well as a USDOT 1st Responder course required within six months of hire.

Those trying out must also possess a valid First Aid certification and CPR certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association for BLS. You must also be skilled in surf swimming in dangerous currents and conditions. A valid Florida Drivers License is required, and annual vision testing will be mandatory.
