Woman Jumped After Crashing on Indian Rocks Beach Bridge, Police Say

The accident closed the bridge for a time Thursday morning.

A 49-year-old Indian Rocks Beach woman is dead following a Thursday morning crash.

Robin Smith, 706 E. Gulf Blvd., was heading eastbound on the Indian Rocks Beach Bridge around 4:50 a.m. when her Jeep ran into a concrete barrier and overturned, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said in an email to media. Smith’s Jeep came to rest on the drawbridge portion of the bridge.

A witness to the crash told deputies, Smith got out of the wrecked car, walked to the bridge’s south side, climbed over the railing and jumped.

Deputies and fire rescue attempted to rescue her, the email said. Although she was pulled from the water a short time after the crash, she was pronounced dead on the scene.

The investigation continues into the crash that closed the bridge for several hours this morning.
