Coral Gables LED Street Light Conversion Is Underway
Approximately 75% of the citywide street light inventory will be converted to LED with a projected savings of over $19,000 annually.
April 29, 2020
At the direction of the City Commission, the Public Works Department began working with Florida Power & Light to convert existing high-pressure sodium street lights to light-emitting diode (LED) lights. The new LED street lights provide a more defined pattern of light which will increase visibility, reduce glare and improve the overall safety of City streets. The City will also yield savings from lower utility costs.

In 2019, 270 street lights in the Central Business District were converted to LED fixtures with a savings of nearly $9,000 annually. Due to the success of that project, Public Works is continuing to move forward with other LED conversions throughout the city. By August 2020, an additional 618 street lights in north Coral Gables, including the Flagler Section and the commercial areas near the University of Miami and Merrick Park will be converted to LED fixtures. Approximately 75% of the citywide street light inventory will be converted to LED with a projected savings of over $19,000 annually and no upfront capital costs.
