Today's riddle: What do you call a belt that is made of watches? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Delray Beach: Head of historical society leaving job (thecoastalstar.com) — Delray Beach residents will soon see a change at the Historical Society as longtime executive director Winnie Diggans Edwards steps down after 13 years, with former president John Miller Jr. serving as interim director. Edwards, whose family has shaped Delray Beach for generations, highlights expanded exhibits, educational programs, and a native-plant heritage garden among her accomplishments. Members can say goodbye at the annual meeting on Oct. 8.
2. Delray Beach: Commission increases tax rate despite mayor's pleas (thecoastalstar.com) — Delray Beach homeowners will see a higher city property tax rate this year after commissioners voted 4–1 for $6.3501 per $1,000 of taxable value, a bit more than a 3% increase. The decision followed heated debates, with Mayor Tom Carney pushing unsuccessfully to hold the line on taxes while other commissioners prioritized rebuilding reserves and covering rising costs for police, fire, and city services.
3. ISLAMIC CENTER: Palm Beach County Reminds That Meeting Is NOT About Proposal (bocanewsnow.com) — Palm Beach County is holding an October 2 public meeting in Delray Beach on the future of the Agricultural Reserve, covering development, housing, transportation, and farming—not the proposed Islamic Center near Lyons Road and Atlantic Avenue. Officials stress the session at the South County Civic Center is general in scope, has a 300-person capacity, and requires RSVPs to Commissioner Maria Sachs' office.
4. Police issue purple alert for woman missing after Delray Medical Center discharge (cbs12.com) — Delray Beach police are urgently asking for help finding Tatiana Adler, who disappeared Tuesday after being discharged from Delray Medical Center and is considered at risk under a purple alert. She is 5-foot-4, about 180 pounds, and was last seen in black shorts, a black sweater, and flip-flops; anyone with information should call the department's non-emergency line at 561-243-7800.
5. EEOC Sues Call 4 Health Under Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (eeoc.gov) — Workers in Delray Beach should know that federal officials have sued local call center Call 4 Health, alleging it forced pregnant employees to resign instead of granting leave as a reasonable accommodation. The EEOC says the company failed to follow the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act when women didn't qualify for FMLA, and is now seeking court-ordered compliance and remedies in the Southern District of Florida.
