Girl Scout Troop 33529 Works Toward Silver Award with Project Supporting Local Animal Rescues
Cadettes create toys, donation kits, and lead a community workshop to benefit A Kitten Place, Fishhawk TNR, and local families with pets
Girl Scout Troop 33529 is actively working toward their Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout Cadette can achieve, through their creative and compassionate project helping homeless animals in their community.
The troop chose to partner with A Kitten Place, a Lithia-based nonprofit that rescues orphaned and at-risk kittens, and Fishhawk TNR, a Lithia/Riverview-based animal rescue. To support the organization’s work, the girls collected donations, hand-crafted cat toys, and even designed DIY catnip toy kits for adopters to take home with their new pets. Each kit included materials and a QR code linking to easy instructions, ensuring adopters could continue to enrich their cats’ lives with homemade play.
In addition, the troop hosted a “Crazy for Cats” community workshop at Art Monkey Emporium in Fishhawk. Families dropped in to make cat toys for local rescues and learn more about the importance of play in pet enrichment. The event was a huge success: children and volunteers together created over 150 cat toys, while also contributing food and supply donations.
The girls extended their impact even further by setting up a month-long donation drive at Art Monkey. Community members filled the collection bin with much-needed items such as paper towels, baby wipes, Method cleaners, litter, toys, and treats. Donations benefited both A Kitten Place and Fishhawk TNR, two organizations dedicated to the welfare of community cats.
Through this multifaceted project, Troop 33529 is not only making a direct difference for animals but also raising awareness about rescue organizations and inspiring others in the community to get involved.
“We are so thankful that our kitties are recipients of these girls’ kind hearts and bright minds,” said representatives from A Kitten Place. “Their creativity and compassion shine through in everything they did.”
By pursuing their Silver Award project, the girls of Troop 33529 are developing leadership, teamwork, and project management skills while making a lasting impact for animals in their community.
The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Cadette (grades 6–8) can achieve. Earning the award requires completing a Cadette Journey and dedicating at least 50 hours to a project that tackles a community issue at its root cause with a sustainable solution. Through this process, Cadettes strengthen leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork skills while making a lasting difference in their communities.
