Local Girl Scout Troop Launches Amazon Wish List to Support Two Silver Award Environmental Projects

Lithia, FL — Girl Scout Cadette Troop 33521 is inviting the community to help support two youth-led environmental conservation projects as the girls work toward earning the prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award—the highest award a Cadette can achieve.

Through hands-on education, community partnerships, and environmental stewardship, the troop is tackling two important challenges facing Florida's coastal ecosystems: protecting oyster habitats and conserving hermit crab populations.

Oyster Oasis

The Oyster Oasis project teaches children and families about the important role oysters play in keeping waterways healthy. As natural filter feeders, oysters improve water quality, create habitat for hundreds of marine species, and strengthen coastal ecosystems.

The troop is creating educational Vertical Oyster Garden (VOG) kits filled with books, activities, puzzles, instructional materials, and hands-on learning resources designed to make marine conservation fun and engaging for elementary-aged students.

As part of the project's lasting impact, the girls will donate a complete Oyster Oasis Education Box to each of their former elementary schools—Bevis Elementary, FishHawk Creek Elementary, Lithia Springs Elementary, Pinecrest Elementary, and Stowers Elementary—as well as local public libraries. Each box is designed to become a permanent educational resource that teachers, media specialists, and students can use for years to come.

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. School principals and media specialists have enthusiastically agreed to accept the educational boxes, expressing how honored they are to partner with the girls and provide these resources to future students.

Daffy's Great Adventure to a Healthier Habitat

The second Silver Award project, Daffy's Great Adventure to a Healthier Habitat, follows the story of Daffy the Hermit Crab to teach children why every shell matters.

Many people don't realize that hermit crabs depend on empty seashells for survival. When shells are removed from beaches as souvenirs, hermit crabs lose their homes and may be forced to use unsafe objects like bottle caps or plastic debris. Through an interactive children's story, educational displays, shell conservation efforts, beach cleanups, and community outreach, the troop hopes to inspire families to leave shells where they belong and help protect Florida's beaches.

Like the Oyster Oasis project, the girls will also donate a book about Hermit Crabs and place signage on the beach about leaving your shells behind for Hermit Crab use.

Building a Lasting Legacy

Rather than creating one-time events, Troop 33521 designed both Silver Award projects to leave behind permanent educational resources that can continue inspiring children long after the projects are complete. By placing education boxes in schools and libraries throughout the community, the girls hope to reach thousands of students for years to come while encouraging future generations to care for Florida's unique coastal ecosystems.
