Grant School Welcomes Vietnam Vet Ted Opiola for Veterans Day

The fifth-graders at CHSD170’s Grant School recently welcomed Mr. Ted Opiola to their classroom in celebration of Veterans Day.
Opiloa, the father of Grant School fifth-grade teacher Justin Opiola, served as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Opiola spoke to the students about joining the US Army in 1965 and recounted experiences dealing with the many missions he flew during the conflict.

Opiola also regaled the students with amusing stories of his service experience and displayed the two Purple Hearts he earned in action, an award issued in the president’s name to those wounded or killed while in the service of their country.
The children enjoyed spending time with Opiola and were especially fascinated with the many photos he brought that showed him, members of his unit, his helicopters, and other items of military memorabilia.

The idea for the event sprung from a conversation between CHSD170 staff member Ron Newquist and the younger Opiola. From that point, Opiola discussed the matter with his father, who agreed to visit, and the event ensued.
“I was so proud of our students and the respect they showed Mr. Opiola,” Newquist said. “They were very engaged in listening to his thoughts and viewing the items and photos he shared and thanked him for spending some time with them.”
“This was a fantastic way to spend time learning about Veterans Day and helped our students grasp the importance of the efforts of every person who serves, and has served, in the United States armed forces,” he concluded.

Los estudiantes de quinto grado de la Escuela Grant del CHSD170 recientemente dieron la bienvenida al Sr. Ted Opiola a su salón de clases para celebrar el Día de los Veteranos.
Opiloa, el padre del maestro de quinto grado de la Escuela Grant, Justin Opiola, sirvió como piloto de helicóptero durante la Guerra de Vietnam.
El Sr. Opiola habló con los estudiantes sobre cómo unirse al ejército de los EE. UU. en 1965 y contó experiencias relacionadas con las numerosas misiones que realizó durante el conflicto.

“Estaba muy orgulloso de nuestros estudiantes y del respeto que le mostraron al Sr. Opiola”, dijo Newquist. "Estuvieron muy interesados en escuchar sus pensamientos y ver los artículos y fotografías que compartió y le agradecieron por pasar algún tiempo con ellos".
“Esta fue una manera fantástica de pasar tiempo aprendiendo sobre el Día de los Veteranos y ayudó a nuestros estudiantes a comprender la importancia de los esfuerzos de cada persona que sirve y ha servido en las fuerzas armadas de los Estados Unidos”, concluyó.
