​ Wilson School Students Enjoy Learning at Kregel’s Pumpkin Patch

Students from CHSD170’s Wilson School recently visited Kregel’s Pumpkin Patch in Lowell, Indiana.

The school’s Kindergarten and first-grade classes visited the patch on October 17th, while second-grade through fifth-grade students visited on October 30th.

Before the visit, classroom teachers presented a series of lessons on the life cycle of pumpkins. As they left Wilson to board the buses taking them on the excursion, their excitement at engaging in a real-world experience encompassing their lessons was palpable.

The Kregel’s staff were welcoming and took the classes in small groups to a series of different activities. The students interacted with farm animals, took hay rides, went down a giant slide, picked out pumpkins from the patch, and engaged in several other endeavors. The exposure actualized the real-world connections of science standards.

The students, though, were not the only ones having fun. Wilson teachers Lynnell Lumpkins (K), Tonya Stanton (1st), Lamese Grunstad (2nd), James Bibbs (Sub for 1st), Natalie Lewis (3rd), Sandra Drake (3rd), Alyssa Misner (4th), and Keturah Byrd (5th) accompanied the students and enjoyed the experience, too.

When they returned from the trip, students were eager to share stories of feeding goats, climbing to sit in the giant rocking chair, and walking through mud to find the best pumpkin.

One of Mrs. Grunstad’s students said, “When I fed the goat, I thought it would bite my fingers. But then it was like we were friends.” Some students are already looking forward to a return visit next year.

Keyara Bishop, Wilson School Principal, praised the value of the trip, saying, “Now we have so many real-life experiences to refer back to when teaching the Biodome Science Unit in the upcoming weeks.”

Los estudiantes de la Escuela Wilson del CHSD170 visitaron recientemente Kregel's Pumpkin Patch en Lowell, Indiana.

Las clases de jardín de infantes y primer grado de la escuela visitaron el parche el 17 de octubre, mientras que los estudiantes de segundo a quinto grado lo visitaron el 30 de octubre.

Antes de la visita, los profesores de aula expusieron una serie de lecciones sobre el ciclo de vida de las calabazas. Cuando dejaron Wilson para abordar los autobuses que los llevarían a la excursión, su entusiasmo por participar en una experiencia del mundo real que abarcara sus lecciones era palpable.

El personal de Kregel fue acogedor y llevó a las clases en grupos pequeños a una serie de actividades diferentes. Los estudiantes interactuaron con animales de granja, montaron en heno, bajaron por un tobogán gigante, recogieron calabazas del huerto y participaron en varias otras actividades. La exposición actualizó las conexiones del mundo real de los estándares científicos.

Pero los estudiantes no fueron los únicos que se divirtieron. Los maestros de Wilson Lynnell Lumpkins (K), Tonya Stanton (1.°), Lamese Grunstad (2.°), James Bibbs (suplente del 1.°), Natalie Lewis (3.°), Sandra Drake (3.°), Alyssa Misner (4.°) y Keturah Byrd ( 5º) acompañó a los estudiantes y también disfrutó de la experiencia.

Cuando regresaron del viaje, los estudiantes estaban ansiosos por compartir historias sobre cómo alimentar a las cabras, subirse para sentarse en la mecedora gigante y caminar sobre el barro para encontrar la mejor calabaza.

Uno de los alumnos de la señora Grunstad dijo: “Cuando le di de comer a la cabra, pensé que me mordería los dedos. Pero luego fue como si fuéramos amigos”. Algunos estudiantes ya esperan volver el próximo año.

Keyara Bishop, directora de la escuela Wilson, elogió el valor del viaje y dijo: "Ahora tenemos muchas experiencias de la vida real a las que referirnos cuando enseñemos en la Unidad de Ciencias Biodome en las próximas semanas".
