Funded largely through the Gainesville Community Reinvestment Area and gas taxes, the curbless brick plaza upgrades century‑old infrastructure and will host outdoor dining and events, while a new $500,000 grant program helps nearby businesses improve their facades and seating.
2. Matheson History Museum presents 'Finding Unheard Voices of the Enslaved in Alachua County' with Coleen DeGroff (alachuachronicle.com) — Gainesville residents can hear local historian Coleen DeGroff discuss her research on enslaved people in Alachua County at the Matheson History Museum on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. She'll explain how records tied to Haile Plantation revealed names and stories of hundreds of enslaved people, and how her work as a Gainesville-based docent and historian continues preserving that history.
3. United We Stand: Remembering Wayne Vincent (wcjb.com) — A Gainesville TV20 segment revisits the story of Private First Class Wayne Vincent, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2009 after choosing to follow his father into the Marine Corps. His parents, Lee and Betty Sue Vincent, share memories of his decision to serve, the journal he began the day he died, and the heartfelt tributes his fellow Marines added for the family.
4. Gator Talk takeaways: Sumrall details energy, cohesion - The Independent Florida Alligator (alligator.org) — Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall says the biggest change since arriving in Gainesville is his players' improved work ethic and cohesion, which showed in a 66–21 win over FAU.
