Today's riddle: What has a cap but no head? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Eye on Gulfport: September 24-30 Gulfport Police Weekly Activity Report (thegabber.com) — Gulfport police handled 471 calls for service between Sept. 24-30, generating 41 reports, five arrests, and numerous traffic and ordinance citations. The report highlights incidents ranging from fraud and roommate disputes to a Town Shores car chase ending at Boca Ciega Bay, repeated group-home runaways, DUI and drug arrests, and marine unit work on derelict vessels affecting local waters.
2. Yvonne Johnson, Gulfport's First Female Mayor, Dies at 98 (thegabber.com) — Gulfport is mourning former mayor Agnes Yvonne Johnson, the city's first female mayor and a decades-long civic leader who died Sept. 18 at age 98. From PTA leadership to 15 years on City Council and key roles in Gulfport's library system, church, and bicentennial celebrations, she shaped much of the community residents know today and remained engaged with current leaders until recent years.
3. Nicest Small Towns To Visit Near Tampa (worldatlas.com) — Gulfport gets a spotlight as one of the nicest small towns near Tampa, with its history rooted in Boca Ciega Bay and a waterfront now focused on recreation and charm. The piece points visitors to Gulfport Beach Recreation Area, Clam Bayou Nature Park's trails and paddling, and the Village Courtyard's shops, eateries, and live music, along with waterfront dining at O'Maddy's.
4. Pinellas County Property Tax Rate Hits Lowest Level in 38 Years (thegabber.com) — Pinellas County has approved a 2027 budget that drops its main property tax rate to the lowest level in 38 years, which will affect what Gulfport homeowners owe on the county portion of their bills. To get there, commissioners cut jobs, trimmed department spending, reduced some road and human services funding, and raised parking fees at certain beach parks while keeping core safety and hurricane-readiness projects funded.
