Flip-Flopping Voters: How the Numbers Stack Up

Here is a visual of how the Republicans and Democrats are moving around. More Democrats have changed than Republicans.

About this time in the voting process the candidates begin to wonder who changed their party affiliation and how may the changes impact the primary? From the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections, there are about:

  • 219,980 registered Republicans
  • 225,490 registered Democrats
  • And 155,880 registered as others.

Looking at the last presidential primary, the volume of all party changes has decreased from 2,547 in 2008 to 1,922 in 2012.

Here is a visual of how the Republicans and Democrats are moving around. More Democrats have changed than Republicans and people who had No Party Affiliation (NPA) seem to switching to the Republican Party.

Compared to the total number of registered voters these changes may not look that big, but as we saw in Iowa a single vote can make a big difference.
