I’m a City Gal, anything beyond bold squirrels and pigeons freak me out.
I went to Wood Ibis Park one day while waiting to go to a meeting at the Chamber office which was then located at the Bank of America across the street. I came in for the meeting looking shell shocked. “OH MY GOODNESS there are things over there that move uninhibitedly and steer straight for you” I wailed. Well, it’s true. If you are unlike me and like all things creepy crawly, cute and bites, etc. Then there is a lot for you to enjoy in Gulfport.
Kurt Z. of Kayak Nature Adventures www.kayaknature.com has been trying for YEARS and I mean years to get me in a Kayak into (or any other place he could get me to try). I squeamishly say, I’m terrified of nature. For those who are not, I put Clam Bayou on my highest picks for exploring nature in Gulfport. There are tamer grounds that I have trod after my initiation into the walking paths of the Bayou which fascinated me but freaked me out at the same time.

Veteran’s Park. One of my favorite green spaces with a tribute to the veterans, a sundial that was given to the City on its Centennial from the Historical Society and a lovely gazebo directly onto Boca Ciega Bay. This is a lovely spot to enjoy an afternoon of self contemplation, walking fido or even learning how to juggle (those of you who frequent the park know what I’m talking about here). Right next to it is Williams Pier. Another favorite of mine. You step out into the abyss of water and just feel how the pioneers of Gulfport did when they bought those mail packets and ferries in here on an all too infrequent basis to bring civilization to the locals. There is even a memorial to the Mary Disston that sank just beyond the Pier as fire engulfed it and was set away from shore so as not to burn down the rest of the boats and pier.
As I mentioned before, if you are a friend of our feathered creatures, head on over to Wood Ibis Park on 58th street and check out the variety. If live Oaks and a manicured park interest you more, head out to either Clymer Park or Tangerine Greenway. Either way, Gulfport has been designated as a “Tree City” for as long as I have been here and I don’t see that intention and status changing anytime soon.

As long as you are not among the rampant wildlife I’m sure I’ll be seeing you around town!
