Lessons Learned

Health, Holidays and Shopping

Lesson learned. I have been laying low for about two months now because I was laid low by something…still not sure what or combination of what’s. But I hope I am back on the mend and I won’t get myself in so deep the next time. What am I talking about you ask…over-doing. Since it is my business as an innkeeper to take care of people’s needs it is often my own that get the last thought. Because I care about the well-being of the place I live and love, Gulfport, I take things to heart.  For the past two months I have had various ailments and treatments and ended up in a face plant in my bed a few days ago.

What did I learn as I was staring at my ceiling from bed? Germs are out there, but if you take normal care of yourself and take time to eat properly, take vitamins, etc. you should not be a target for a more aggressive form of virus. Emotions are out there, cling to the positive one’s and let go the negative. Lastly, it is ok to say 'I’m taking time for myself' and not feel guilty about it. As a single business owner this last one is the hardest. I would suspect a mother would feel the same way too.

The holiday season is upon us and things get busier and more emotional. This is a pre-emptive strike on my part to say ‘take heed and take care’ on all levels. What should have been an inconvenient cold has turned into two months of inactivity and physical discomfort. Trust me, it is not pleasant to have your distinctive hacking sound be the way someone finds you in a store!

Hopefully that store will be local this year. Remember, shop locally and support your neighbors. Many local shops and restaurants are participating in Black Friday specials. Think out of the box this year, give gift certificates for a hair cut, oil change, message, restaurants, etc. all from Gulfport businesses.
