Precious Times with my Sailor Daddy During WWll

l remember a couple of 'leaves' daddy had from Jacksonville Navy Base that were special for me. One time he bought me a pair of patent leather MaryJane shoes . . . on the way home we stopped somewhere for a soda and l kept putting my feet up on the counter to show everyone my new shoes. Things were real tough then, so those shoes meant a lot to me.  Daddy was big on shoe shining . . . and he told me l could keep those clean with vaseline . . . which l did . . . and then left them on the play table outside....to find them stolen in the morning. Oh, was my mom mad, so was l.
