Thanks for the Memories

Behind the scenes at events

None of the events that happen in Gulfport could be done without the cooperation of the City of Gulfport. Yes, I know, thank you to City Council for approving the events, but more so, thanks to those that actually get their hands dirty and dig in.

Shortly after I moved to Gulfport and opened the S, Jim O’Reilly became the Director of Leisure Services. We shared many similarities in our hopes and dreams for Gulfport and our past experiences. I for one was sorry to see him leave Leisure Services and turn Center Stage as City Manager (I don’t get to see him much any more and it’s not as much fun since we aren’t planning the next big thing!) However, he has always known that events bring a town to the attention of the wider audience and that brings in the money to sustain the local businesses. Jim remains very hands-on to any event that happens in town which I truly appreciate.

However, there are many unsung heroes on the Gulfport Staff that never get noticed and should be:

Bob Williams, Parks and Recreation Superintendent is the front line for any event, he is there and right behind him is Tim Connor, Parks Crew Chief and his staff. I have never dealt with a crew that was so cheerful whether it was 5:00 a.m and freezing and we are taping a live broadcast or 10 p.m. and hauling tables from the street after a festival that lasted all day. Never a complaint, always willing to do whatever is asked of them. These individuals are out there EVERY day, doing their duties and then are called upon to go above and beyond at any event, no matter how large or small and they are wonderful at it.

I have to give special thanks to Gail Biron, Technical Events Specialist. Whatever that means. Gail has done the Chamber, Merchants and other organizations the honor of producing commercials that have the criteria that Brighthouse requires if they sponsor an event. Even if they don’t sponsor us, she makes sure some promotion goes up on You Tube and wherever else she can ensure it gets out to the general public. She has made posters on her own time for those of us who are technically challenged. And she video tapes our events and uploads them so we can share them with others.

Before any event happens in Gulfport there is a chain of communication from the City Manger, the Police Chief, the Fire Chief, the Parks and Recreation Department and many other entities. These events may seem like they just appear, but there is a lot of behind the scenes meetings, compromises and biting of nails to make sure all the stars align to make it a successful event.

I hope to introduce you to some of those talented and proud Gulfportians who put these events together as I continue to blog. Until then I’m sure I’ll be seeing you around town!
