Fireworks, Wind, Thunder, Lightning and Your Pet

Make sure your pets are prepared for the summer storms and summer holidays.

Summer is upon us. Summer is full of big storms and big holidays. Many pets are afraid of thunder, lightning, wind and fireworks. Even small pocket pets ,birds and reptiles react to loud storms and fireworks. Here are some tips for pet owners to help keep their faithful companions- both big and small- safe and happy during the loud summer storms and fantastic fireworks.

Make sure the pets are inside!

If your cats love to have fun in the sun, make sure they are safely in for the big storm. Small caged animals such as birds, rodents and reptiles can also have bad reactions to thunder, lightning and loud downpours. Make sure all pets are inside for major holidays as well. Not only can the smell of a good cookout attract the dog or cat but fireworks can drive an animal away from their yard to find shelter. While we think the Fourth of July holiday is all about picnics, fun and family it is considered one of the most dangerous days of the year for our pets.

Make sure you pet has a safe haven!

During the summer and loud holidays like July Fourth, I make sure all my pets have safe havens to hide in. All dog crates and dog dorms are covered with sheets and blankets with soft bedding inside so my dogs will feel they can ‘hide’ in their ‘caves’ and feel safe. The cats have thier soft bedding and ‘blankies’ to hide in too! The pocket pets’ cage has pieces of rags, toweling and hammocks to crawl under when it gets loud outside. Small cages can also be covered to make the cage 'safe'. Try making some safe havens for all of your pets.

Playtime and positive training during storms!

The rainy season will last 6 months. Storm time can be a great time to do some positive reinforcement of alternate responses. If your dogs or other pets get anxious during a storm, make storm time the ‘training time’. By focusing on training or playing your dog or pet, he or she will focus on you and engaging in meaningful activities and not the storm (or fireworks) outside. Here are some ideas:

  • Use storm time to engage your dog or cat (or any small pet) in play and reinforcement. In other words – play with your pet.
  • Do standard training like sit, lay and stay with your dog. Doing training will focus the animal in things other than the outside.
  • Make storm times special feeding times. During the summer, our storm times can be consistently in the afternoon or early evening thus often coinciding with feeding schedules. Food is generally a positive experience for any animal. Pairing food and treats with storm ‘noise’ can make the thunder and firework sounds less offensive.

Last Resort

If your pet is absolutely petrified and anxious during storms and fireworks, there are homeopathic, over the counter and prescribed medications that can be used to ease their fright and discomfort. Any medications can be used in conjunction with training techniques and all of the suggestions above. Any medication, even over the counter medications, should be used with the knowledge and advice of your veterinarian.

Lastly, the Fourth of July is this weekend. Let’s all work at keeping our pets healthy, happy and safe.

Happy Fourth of July. Everyone!
