'He Was An Honorable Man, He Was A Family Man'

St. Petersburg Police Chief Chuck Harmon said Officer David S. Crawford was not wearing a bullet proof vest Monday night when he was shot and killed in the line of duty.

46-year-old Officer David S. Crawford leaves behind a wife, Donna, and a 24-year-old daughter, Amanda.

“He was an honorable man, he was a family man,” St. Petersburg Police Chief Chuck Harmon said at an afternoon press conference.

Harmon said Crawford was a 25 year veteran of the force. A man who spent most of his career on the night shift by choice. He said Crawford loved his family, horses and talking to people.

“He had a knack for being able to talk to people," Harmon said.

Harmon added, "we're gonna miss him . . . it hurts, it stings, but we’ll get through it.”

Harmon said that Crawford was not wearing a bullet proof vest when he was shot. Stating that it's mandated that officers have a bullet proof vest with them and that it is their own discretion if they want to wear it. Crawford was shot multiple times and killed Monday night while trying to apprehend a suspected burglar near the 700 block of 3rd Avenue South in St. Petersburg.

The Chief added, “You get in this job knowing that there is a risk. . . We’ve had a terrible set of tragedies the past three weeks . . . we’re gonna look listen and learn to see what we can do better.”

The reward leading to the identification and arrest of a suspect has increased from $50,000 to $100,000 with half of that coming from the FBI. The other half is committed from several agencies.

Officials are looking for a black male in this late teen's to early 20s. He is about 5'9" with a slender build. He was last seen wearing dark shorts, white socks and NIKE flip flops.
