“I want a puppy for Christmas!”

Santa's heard it and I'm sure you've heard it too. Here's a few things to consider before you adopt.

I am sure many people hear this plea, as Christmas approaches. In fact, I have had a couple inquiries about dogs, and people would like to give a dog to their child for Christmas. Even though this is one of the most joyous gifts, as a child’s eyes light up with excitement, there are some things to consider before immediately adopting a pet.

  • First off, one needs to think if a puppy or a dog that is already housebroken is the best.
  • Look at your family and decide if you need an energetic dog or a laid back dog. Checking out breeds and their personalities is always a good idea also. Even though some breeds are stereotyped as bad, that reputation is not necessarily true.  Or, you may think a small dog is great, but there are many little ones that do not do well with children.
  • You also need to discuss responsibilities in the family. Who will feed, walk, bathe, and train your dog? Everyone is usually very excited about a new pet, until the newness wears off, so make sure you are ready for the long haul.

After you have considered your needs, the next step is to find a veterinarian, puppy/dog-proof your home, get supplies, and discuss with the family the type of "doggy family" you are going to be.

Dogs chew, especially puppies, and the things they chew can be harmful, so this may be something you need to start being conscious of. Dog also are great at snagging whatever drops on the floor.

The right supplies would include food, toys, training needs, bedding, TAGS, and treats. Some of this will depend on whether the new pet is a puppy or adult.  Puppies, just like human babies, grow teeth and need something to chew on, where adult dogs do not have those sharp baby teeth.

Whether you are trying to surprise your child, or if they know the dog is coming, the whole family needs to sit down and have a discussion about the dog behavior. Dogs train and learn by consistency, and the whole family needs to be on the same page about what and how they want to train the dog. The dog will need the same command from everyone. Two that people use interchangeably that can confuse a dog are “off” and “down”. Another would be, “drop it” and “leave it.”

If everyone uses different verbiage, the dog will be confused.

Whatever your decision, on puppy versus dog, make sure it is well loved, and becomes a part of your family! A dog can bring some of the most incredible joy to life. I know; mine do!
