Learn About Saving Energy and Sustainability in September

In September, two exciting educational opportunities are coming up from the University of Florida/Pinellas County Extension. One is at a nominal fee, and the other is absolutely free, including free goodies for everyone who registers. Please help spread the word to anyone you think might be interested!

Sustainable Floridians (SM) Training Program

This course is the same one I took to become a Master Volunteer for the Sustainable Floridians Program. The program is the equivalent to becoming a Master Gardener, except instead of educating the public on gardening, volunteers educate people on sustainable living practices such as saving energy.
The classes run from September 11 through October 30, 2013, at the Extension Office, located at 12520 Ulmerton Road in Largo. Trainees will attend on Wednesdays from 6 to 8:30 pm, and a light dinner is provided each evening. The curriculum covers six core courses, and participants who complete five of the six will receive a course completion certificate.
The $65 fee includes eight dinners, course materials, and registration for the entire program. The core modules include: Why Should You Care; Consumerism; Water - Florida's Lifeblood; Food Systems; Energy; and Community Leadership and Engaging Others. Transportation and Land Use is also offered as an elective for the series.
Only 20 seats are open for this session.

On September 14, 2013, the Pinellas County Extension is also offering a free three-hour symposium featuring a keynote address by an award-winning green building engineer with many years of experience, Dr. Jennifer Languell. This event will run from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm at the Pinellas County Extension, 12520 Ulmerton Rd. in Largo.

The symposium will feature expert panel discussions about water and energy efficiency and home improvements. Conservation topics will include irrigation, PV panels, appliances, the use of native plants, and more with input from Duke Energy, Florida Yards and Neighborhoods, Tampa Bay Water, and other resources.
