Old Electronics Help Gulfport Police Explorers
Gulfport Police Explorers Post 995 is asking for donations of old and unwanted electronics, as a way to raise funds to attend the June Florida Explorers competition.

A unique recycling program turns unwanted electronics into much-needed cash, at the same time helping local teens interested in law enforcement careers.
Gulfport Police Explorers Post 995 is now working with FundingFactory Recycling. The aim of the program is to collect used or discarded electronic gadgets from around the community. Members send the old items to FundingFactory in exchange for new technology, recreation products or cash.
"Companies interested in demonstrating a commitment to education and the environment can participate free of charge," says Sergeant Charleston Fritts, Alpha Squad leader for the Explorers.

"FundingFactory will send each supporting business prepaid shipping labels for the return of collected cartridges, cell phones, small electronics and laptops," Fritts says.
The Explorers work with teens—aged 14-19—who want to learn about jobs in law enforcement. In addition to training in crime scene investigations, defensive tactics and tutoring in class work, the Explorers provide support for the Gulfport Police with additional security at community events.

Money raised from donations will help send the Explorers to the 2012 Florida Association of Police Explorers (FAPE) State Competition. The event is scheduled for June 24-30 in Crystal River.
At last year's FAPE contest, Post 995 finished eighth overall and earned third place trophies for Active Shooter and Search and Arrest.
Fritts says donations can also be dropped off at the Gulfport Police Department at 2401 53 Street South.
