Summer Crime Q & A with Gulfport Police Chief

Gulfport Police Chief Robert Vincent talks about summer crime and what people need to know about preventing a crime.

Is there such a thing as summer crime?

"I suppose the bottom line answer is yes, it's complicated. It's not like there's  a very sharp spike in June, July (or) August. It's only slightly higher, it's not like a big increase."

"Anywhere there are people. There are more people outside and more kids out of school. . . these happen anytime, it's not definitely at night."

Are these people or school-aged kids that are committing the crimes?

"We rarely solve any of these crimes, people may assume it's school kids, but because most of these go unsolved, we don't know."

How can people avoid being a victim?

"Most of the crimes are crimes of opportunity. While they are out and about they see something they want. Don't leave your stuff unattended, lock it up. If you decide to go to the beach and put your keys in your shoes and go swimming, that's not a good idea. If parents keep an eye on their kids and notice that they have something they didn't have when the left the house, ask them where they got it. "

Should people register their bikes?

"Of course, it helps us find them when they get stolen."

Is Gulfport has safe as we think it is?

"Gulfport is a small town. But it is part of a very large metro area. We experience some of the same symptoms as everybody else."
